What is the essential cover for Camera Operators?

We talk about photographers and filmmakers a lot here but what about those crucial people working behind the scenes for big shoots and productions? Without camera operators and technicians there would be no television, no film, no big productions. So today we talk you through the vital, not to be missed insurance cover for the unsung heroes – camera operators

People

First of all, consider the people you are responsible for.  Do you employ an assistant or a runner? If you have anyone working under your care, whether they are employees or freelancers, you will need Employers’ Liability because you are liable if they are injured at work. This is a non negotiable, legal requirement, whether they are employees or labour only subcontractors like assistants.

Public liability is another essential cover you must have in place, regardless of whether the shoot or production is insured by the production company. It covers you if any third parties are injured or their property is damaged and they make a claim against you directly. A production company’s insurance will not necessarily respond to a claim made against you directly.

Equipment

No surprises that you will need insurance to cover your own equipment for loss, theft and accidental damage. Accidental damage covers any damage resulting from a singular insured event, for example, if you drop your camera or spill a glass of water on your laptop. Please note, it will not cover gradual deterioration or mechanical defects.

You will also need to cover any equipment you hire in. Make sure you have ample insurance, to cover the value of the equipment, including cover for loss of hire. Loss of hire covers the costs to reimburse the hire company for their loss of income as a result of the loss or damage to their equipment.

Your professional conduct

Lastly, the cover that no one in our industry can ignore – Professional Indemnity. This protects you should you face claims alleging that you have been professionally negligent. It includes complaints about the quality of your work, copyright infringement and breach of copyright.
